What is poetry?

Poetry is a genre of literature in which feelings and ideas can be expressed in a particular intensity by using distinctive style and rhyming.

What are the features of poetry?

Poetry has several main features: rhyme, rhythm, alliteration, and simile. Rhyme is the repetition of similar sounds, like cat and rat. Rhythm is the repetition of sounds, phrases, or patterns to create a musical effect. Alliteration is the repetition of the first letter of words, such as "Grass Growing Greener". A way to describe something is by saying it's something else. For example, "He is strong like a superhero".

Some typical features of rhyme are metaphors and personification. A figure of speech in which a word or phrase represents an object or idea is known as a metaphor. For example, "She is sunshine, brightening our day". Personification is writing something about self.

Different categories of poetry

There are several types of poems. The most common types of poems are sonnet, limerick, narrative poems, and rhyming poems. Ode, ballad, acrostic, haiku etc. All these types of poetry differ in their structure and style. A sonnet is a 14-line poem, generally on love. A Haiku is a 3-line poem, and this first, second and third line contains 5, 7, and 5 syllables, respectively. A limerick is a humorous poem consisting of 5 lines. The first two lines are longer (7-10 syllables), the following two lines are smaller (5-7 syllables), and one closing line (7-10 syllables).
