Independence Day

We celebrate our Independence Day on 15th August. This was the day that India became free from British rule after 100 years. It is a national holiday when all educational institutions, government offices, banks, and semi-government institutions remain closed. Flag-hoisting ceremonies are held everywhere – even in residential complexes, and people play patriotic songs on loudspeakers.

In my school, it is compulsory to be present on Independence Day for the flag hoisting ceremony. We listen to a speech by the Chief Guest, sing the national anthem, and shout Jai Hind with all our might! The best part is that we get Indian sweets or toffees at the end of the ceremony. We have different competitions during the whole week – painting, essay writing, extempore speech, and even poetry writing—all with Independence as the theme.

On the evening of 14th August, the President of India addresses the nation, and it is shown on TV. On 15th August, the Prime Minister of India hoists the Tricolor at Red Fort and gives a speech. A 21-gun salute is accorded by soldiers of the Indian Army.

This holiday is celebrated by all Indians with great fervor. Shops change their window displays to include the three colors of the Indian flag. Even vegetable vendors on the street arrange vegetables like carrots, radishes, and beans, to show their patriotism.
